In the book of ‘The 7 habits of highly effective people’, Stephen Covey quoted the words of Erich Fromm who beautifully explains the personality of today’s individual:
“Today we come across an individual who behaves like an automaton;
-Who does not know or understand himself
-and the only person that he knows is the person he is supposed to be
-whose meaningless chatter has replaced communicative speech
-whose synthetic smile has replaced genuine laughter
-and whose sense of dull despair has taken the place of genuine pain”
In other words, it seems that our emotional intelligence has been killed, murdered or assassinated. We no longer believe in ourselves nor do we appreciate who we are as a human being since we are so busy acting like a mechanical device or a robot whose life is programmed with a set of rules, dedicated to imitate someone else. That’s what we do! We look down at ourselves and find it more acceptable and convenient to imitate someone who we presume is a better individual than who we are ( and who most probably is imitating someone else as well).
Hence, we don’t know ourselves since we never took the time to study who we are and what makes us happy because we are so busy focusing on how we should be so that others are happy. This is why we can never bring in any form of good and beneficial speech to others or to ourselves as this has been traded for useless and futile talk, may it be gossiping or backbiting or irrelevant stuff that won’t bring in any form of self-improvement.
Creativity and Innovations are replaced with fears and apprehension of what others would think. We become so fake that even our smile and laughter are no longer genuine and honest but mostly fake, fabricated and deceitful until we completely forget how to react or respond when we feel real happiness.
Having lost the ability to feel, we get ourselves to worry for nothing; made-up and false depression and dejection invade our lives to such an extent where people even idiotically attempt to end their lives, a life that one’s parents beautifully took 9+ months to bring to this world. And when it comes to real pain, this is left ignored while genuine tears feel hesitant to come down rolling those eyes so as to make one feel better.
It becomes almost impossible to feel any better as we are not living our life but rather we are living a lie, with no emotions and no feeling. Life becomes a mere imitation of stupidity and nothing else. The individual of today is living a lifeless lie!
How hard can it be to….JUST BE YOURSELF!
